ROAR

Once a year, the San Juan Lions Club wishes to thank all the citizens who are making our Aluminum can collection program, ROAR (Reach Out And Recycle), a success; This project is a win, win, win project. It helps preserve our environment, it provides money for Lions’ community projects, and it saves the tax payers dump and hauling costs.
Some interesting facts on aluminum cans and recycling:
1.For every six-pack of beer or soda not recycled, the energy equivalent of one beverage can full of gasoline is squandered.
2.Aluminum can recycling saves 95 percent of the energy needed to make aluminum from bauxite ore.
3.The making of cans from recycled aluminum cuts related air pollution by nearly 95%.
4.The recycling process of aluminum does not produce the chemical sulfur dioxide, which creates acid rain, while the natural production of aluminum cans produces sulfur dioxide.
5.Replacing one wasted can requires about 0.5 kWh of electricity: enough to light a 100-watt bulb for 5 hours, or to power an average laptop computer for 11 hours.
Special thanks to the Senior Center, King Fitch & the Town of Friday Harbor Council, San Juan County Officials and Consignment Treasures for allowing us to place our collection bins at the Food Bank, the Dump and Consignment Treasures. The Lions are also accepting other types of aluminum at Consignment Treasures.
Please encourage your friends and neighbors to help our environment by recycling aluminum cans.

SSIS Completes New Science Facility
Spring Street International School (SSIS) recently finished a new science facility, completing the goal to dramatically enhance its lab science facilities. The new facility represents a major update to an existing modular structure and was enabled by the generous donations of key local supporters.
The lab will host regular science classes and lectures in Biology, Physics and Chemistry by SSIS staff Bob Rood (Middle School) and Del Guenther (High School). In addition, SSIS is offering a dynamic new course in Biotechnology, taught by Dr. Howard Clark, of the Center for Cell Dynamics at the University of Washington, Friday Harbor Laboratories.

A Real Water Shortage Is Known By Some

Friday Harbor residents have launched a campaign to provide clean water for Remote Village. An effort is underway for Friday Harbor to assist another waterfront fishing town in the world that is less fortunate than ours.
As a follow-on to their work in Kunya Village this year, Joanruth Baumann and Dick Coffey are attempting to help the community solve an enormous health problem - the lack of any clean drinking water.
The water is heavily contaminated with sewage, cholera, typhoid and parasites. Half of the population affected is children.
This area of southwestern Kenya, on the shores of Lake Victoria, has received little aid or assistance from outside, even though area residents have the highest HIV/AIDS rate in the world - about 40%. For this community of 5,000 people, the only water available needs to be scooped from the lake in buckets and carried miles home each day.

Support Scholarships for 2008 Graduates
Bowl between 12:00 and 5:00 on Oct. 15th, 16th, 17th & 18th and Support Scholarships for 2008 Graduates.
The owner and the manager of Paradise Lanes, Roger Owen and Scott Olinger, are promoting a Bowling For Scholars week on Octoberl:15, 16, 17, & 18th. Any person who bowls between noon and 5:00 pm on those days, Paradise Lanes will give 25% of the proceeds to 2008 Graduates through Dollars For Scholars.
To help create interest and competition, the Lions Club, The Kiwanis Club, The Rotary Club, The Soroptimist Club, Friday Harbor High School, Friday Harbor Middle School, Friday Harbor Elementary School and the Spring Street School are challenging each other for a certificate and bragging rights.
Here are the team challenge rules:
1.) To count as a scored game, the game has to be bowled between noon and 5:00 pm.
2.) The total of the top four bowling scores for each group will be added up to find the winner.
3.) The service clubs’ scores must be comprised of at least two Club members and each Club is allowed to have two “Ringers”. A “Ringer” is anyone who wants to bowl and give any single game bowling score to any club they choose. A “Ringer” can bowl additional games to try and raise the score given, or to give a score to any other service club or school they want. Each bowling score can only be used one time.
4.) The schools’ scores must be comprised of at least one District employee and one student. The schools are allowed to have 2 ringers.
5.) Each group can seek a “Golden Ringer”. The “Golden Ringers” will come from the highest 8 scoring bowlers of the week. The highest “Golden Ringer’s” score goes to the group with the highest bid for the “Golden Ringer”, on down to the lowest “Golden Ringer” to the lowest bid. For example, if a person bids 20 cents a pin for a “Golden Ringer” and their group’s Golden Ringer scored 200 pts., then that person would pay $40 as a tax deductible donation to DFS for the “Golden Ringer’s” score. Any Club or school can bid or seek promoters and sponsors for a “Golden Ringer” to replace their group’s lowest score.
6.) Anyone can bowl, and become a “Ringer” or “Golden Ringer” for any group, and anyone can add $$ to the bid for a “Golden Ringer” for any group. The group with the highest accumulative collections gets the “Golden Ringer” score.
7.) Join us for the FUN at Paradise Lanes and help collect dollars for scholarships.
Individual names and group scores will be posted daily at Paradise Lanes. Please come out and support your group and 2008 Graduates.
Thank you, The Dollars For Scholars Board

Realtors Sponsor Local Food Drive
The San Juan County Association of Realtors have committed themselves to a community-wide food drive to benefit the hungry. Realtors plan to distribute “Care and Share” food collection bags, courtesy of King’s Market, beginning Monday, October 15th. Bags will be collected Thursday evening October 18th for delivery to the Friday Harbor Food Bank.
The SJCAR food drive collected 2000 lbs. of food in 2006 and hope to exceed that total in 2007. Dorothy Lawson, head of the local food bank, wishes that you donate un-dented canned goods, toiletries and non-perishable food items. To make the pick-up easier on the night of October 18th, please leave the bags at the end of your driveway, or drop them off at any local realty office before October 19th.
If you wish to donate money in lieu of food, please make checks payable to Friday Harbor Food Bank. “Through the efforts of local realtors, we hope to not only increase the food stock at the Friday Harbor Food Bank, but also, to increase everyone’s continuing concern for the hungry in our community.” Thanks go to King’s Market and Printonyx for their continuing support and to all those who donate.
