03/16/2008: "Zach Named Finalist In National Geographic Bee."


ig_Zach_Reshovsky-1 (33k image)Zachary Reshovsky has just been notified by the National Geographic Society that he is one of the finalists eligible to compete in the 2008 Washington Geographic Bee.

Zach is an 8th grader in the Griffin Bay Learning Center-Parent Partner Program. Zach is the son of Marc Reshovsky, Last year Zach was also a state finalist, coming in second to Caitlyn Snaring of Redmond, Washington., who was the final winner

Bees were held in schools with fourth through eighth grade students throughout the state to determine each school’s Geographic Bee winner. School level winners then took a qualifying test, which they submitted to the National Geographic Society. In each of the 50 states and in the territories, the National Geographic Society invited the students with the top 100 scores to compete at the state level.

The 2008 Washington Geographic Bee will be held at the Greater Tacoma Convention and Trade Center on Friday, April 4, 2008.

The state winner and his or her teacher will represent Washington in the national finals at the National Geographic Society headquarters in Washington D. C. The national winner will receive a $25,000 college scholarship.

At the school Bee level this year, students had to answer such questions as:

One of the world’s largest oil exporters borders on the North Sea and Arctic Ocean. Name this country. (Answer: Norway)

A country bordered by India on three sides often experiences severe floods during monsoon season because it lies on a low delta plain. Name this country.
(Answer: Bangladesh)

Airplanes heading north from Belize City to New Orleans fly over what large peninsula? (Answer: Yucatan Peninsula)
