10/16/2007: "SSIS Completes New Science Facility"

Spring Street International School (SSIS) recently finished a new science facility, completing the goal to dramatically enhance its lab science facilities. The new facility represents a major update to an existing modular structure and was enabled by the generous donations of key local supporters.

The lab will host regular science classes and lectures in Biology, Physics and Chemistry by SSIS staff Bob Rood (Middle School) and Del Guenther (High School). In addition, SSIS is offering a dynamic new course in Biotechnology, taught by Dr. Howard Clark, of the Center for Cell Dynamics at the University of Washington, Friday Harbor Laboratories.

Dr. Clark’s addition continues the tradition at the school to tap into the rich expertise that exists in our community and provide a high level of academic excellence and rich, varied classroom experience through community outreach.

The construction of the new facility would not have been possible without the volunteer leadership of Dr. David Duggins, a F.H Labs professor and Spring Street parent, and Mr. Bob Rood, SSIS science teacher.

Significant donations funded the project and SSIS wishes to publicly thank Mr. Gary Piaget, a Spring Street parent from Orcas Island and Dr. Patricia Morse, Co-Chair of the SSIS Board of Trustees for their generosity.

The donations continue a pattern of strong local support of the school’s mission and the volunteer labor of staff, parents, board members and students during the summer to build the new facility.
SSIS welcomes the entire community to come see the new facility and enjoy a tour of our campus.
