05/02/2007: "SJ Democrats & SJrideshare.org Dinner May 6th"

SJ Island Democrats & SJrideshare.org are joining together to ask all San Juan Islanders the question: What Moves You? (in a non-carbon way. And then to invite all to attend an evening of discovery, conversation, dinner and a film around the idea of looking at new ways to move around on the island.

The event begins at 5 pm on Sunday, May 6 at the Mullis Community Senior Center where several hybrid and electric vehicles will be on display along with information regarding their costs, mileage and maintenance expectations. Other island transportation possibilities will be shown.

Dinner will be served at 6pm followed by a discussion lead by local experts on all these transportation modes, plus information on: biofuels, ridesharing on island and off, connections to public transportation on the mainland, new bicycle designs in the offing, island trails and pathways etc.

Friday Harbor and San Juan County have just approval the sjrideshare program for a series of safe hitchhiking pullouts on the island. Rideshare also recently petitioned and won legislative approval in Olympia for a smaller increase in ferry fares followed by a freeze until new ferry funding is found. Liza Michaelson and Anne Sheridan lead the local rideshare program and will lead the discussion Sunday evening.

The film to be shown following the discussion is: Who Killed the Electric Car, an award-winning documentary on the recent demise (and destruction) of the popular EV-1 electric vehicles manufactured by General Motors.

Advance tickets for the event are $10 available at Garden Path Café and Griffin Bay Books. Tickets at the door will be $12.
