01/02/2009: "Betty Campbell Scott"

October 21, 1923 - December 12, 2008

Betty Campbell Scott, a resident of the San Juan Islands since 1980, passed away at the Islands Convalescent Center on December 12, 2008, following a brief illness.

Betty was born and raised in the state of Utah. She obtained her Batchelor's degree in ' Home Economics from the University of Utah, and her Master's degree from the University of Washington, and became a Professor in the Family Life Department of Washington State University in Pullman.

She married Dr. Frank Scott, a decorated World War II veteran and later a Professor of Geology at WSU. The two had a close and happy marriage until Dr. Scott's death in 2000.

Betty and Frank first purchased property on Crane Island while still living in Pullman. They spent summers in the San Juans prior to retiring to the home they had built on Crane.

In the 1980's they purchased a waterfront unit at Cannery Village in Friday Harbor and were able to experience island life from both residences, as well as from their power boat which provided them much enjoyment.

Betty had no living relatives at the time of her death, but left behind a number of close friends, particularly at Cannery Village, who miss her greatly.
She was known for her love of nature and of animals, especially her beloved Cairn Terriers, Tammy, Sandy and Benji. She was a generous supporter of animal welfare organizations including Wolf Hollow Wildlife Rehabilitation, the Animal Protection Society of Friday Harbor, and the Progressive Animal Welfare Society, and a long-time supporter of The San Juan Preservation Trust, whose work includes wildlife habitat conservation.

A celebration of Betty's life is planned for early spring.
