03/28/2011: "Thank You Bike Gurus!"

On Saturday, March 19th, nearly 80 people showed up for the Bike Tune-up and Warm-up event sponsored by Island Rec’s Bike Paths and Trails Committees. As the sun came out, the event picked up speed as folks of all sizes and abilities, from a 2-month-old youngster to a 77-year-old cycling veteran, brought their bicycles to the elementary school play shed for a once-over. Some of the bicycles had not seen much action in some time, but by the time they left, chains had been greased, seat heights adjusted, brakes tested, and gears checked.

While there are a lot of people to thank for this event, including the Bike Paths group and the EMS folks who brought helmets, I want to thank the wonderful bike repair artists at Island Bicycles and Travel Light Cycles, who were the heart of the event. Imagine the effort to quickly tune over 50 bicycles in about 2 hours! Paul Ahart closed his Island Bicycles shop for the morning; with help from Malcolm Wynn, he worked furiously to get bikes in shape. Mikial Denker and Frank Beatty (with the new Travel Light Cycles bike recycling shop in the Surina Business Park) also labored away without pause, and raffled off a reconditioned mountain bike to boot. As the bicycles continued to roll in, Dick Packard and Val Veirs also jumped into the fray.

Thank you to our local bike shops and volunteers for giving your time, skills, and materials so generously for this event. The many smiles it created would not have been possible without you!
