05/11/2005: "Thanks To The Volunteers"

7 May 2004

Dear Editor,

Last week hundreds of Island children and their families "Celebrated Play" at Island Rec's 15th Annual Children's Festival, and enjoyed hours of free activities, entertainment and food thanks to the volunteer organizing committee and to the organizations and businesses that provided activities for the day and sponsored the event.

A volunteer committee of five inspiring women worked behind the scenes organizing this smoothing running event. Jan Bollwinkel-Smith, Danielle Fischer, Mary Kate Panaro, Andra Pillsbury and Angie Smith are to be commended for the energy, creativity, commitment, time and talent they each put forth into organizing the festival. It was through their good work that children had the opportunity to silk screen a t-shirt, build a boat, create a work of art, watch a show, dress up in all sorts of costumes and play, play playthroughout the day.

Part of this year's festival activities included a poster contest to promote the festival and having children's groups decorate banners that were used to adorn the fair building. The American Legion Auxiliary, EMS, Head Start, Herb's, Rotary, San Juan Island Prevention Coalition, San Juan Island Fitness Club, San Juan Island Community Theatre and Westcott Bay Art Institute were new to the festival providing activities for children. They joined the veteran group of organizations that included Club Mud, DVSA, Elementary School PTSA, Family Resource Center, Family Umbrella Group, 4H, Summer Creative Arts Day Camp, Friday Harbor Fire Department, Kiwanis, Lighthouse Preschool, Lions Club, Lutheran Church, Master Gardeners, Sheriffs Department, Fire District #3, San Juan Island Historical Museum, San Juan Island Library, San Juan Nature Institute, San Juan Island Sailing Foundation, San Juan Island Soccer League, Service Alternative for WA, Soroptimist of Friday Harbor, Stepping Stones, Whale Museum and Wolf Hollow.

The festival received financial support from Wells Fargo, Soroptimist, Masons, San Juan Fitness Club, Coldwell Banker, Rock Island, Salt Spray Window Cleaning, John L. Scott, Islanders Bank, Kings Market, Downriggers, Roche Harbor Resort, American Legion, Diesel America West and Lowe's Construction. Ace Hardware, Bon Accord Kayak Tours, Friday Harbor School District, By Design, Friday Harbor Freight, Haley's, Osito's, Pacific Design, Rocky Bay Caf, San Juan Coffee Roasting and The Toy Box all supported the Festival through the donation of goods and services.

As time passes I am increasingly amazed by the generosity of this community. I have a great appreciation for everyone who played a part in the success of this event. That success was evident in the smiles, laughter and discoveries made by children on that special day.
