10/15/2007: "San Juan County Schedules Flu Shot Clinics"
The San Juan County Health and Community Services Department has scheduled influenza vaccination clinics on Lopez, Shaw, Orcas, Waldron and San Juan Islands beginning at the end of October.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control have designated the target groups to receive flu vaccinations to include children 6 months to 5-years-old, pregnant women, individuals with chronic illness, healthcare workers and all adults over the age of 50 years.
San Juan County Health Officer, Frank James, M.D., also encourages people between ages 5 and 50 to get flu shots. “The shots are not 100 percent effective, especially in the elderly, and if you contract influenza, you may infect someone with a weakened immune system. Also,” James says, “ask yourself if you want to risk getting sick and missing a week of work because you didn’t get a shot.”
The shots will cost $28 each, payable by check or cash (the department cannot accept credit cards). However, County health workers will accept and process Medicare Part B and Medicaid insurance payments for the shots.
At the November 6 clinic at the Eastsound Fire Station, motorists will be able to roll down their window and be vaccinated while still in the car. The drive through clinic is part of a practice run to help health personnel be prepared to give vaccinations quickly in case of a health emergency.
