05/04/2007: "Low Income Seniors Free Produce Program"

ig_WIC_Senior_Progam-1 (54k image)OLYMPIA -- The seasonal opening of farmers markets across the state brings an opportunity for fresh fruits and vegetables for low income seniors. In its sixth year, the popular Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program , co-sponsored by the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) will make farmers market checks available to more than 14,000 eligible low income seniors 60 years or older. American Indian and Alaska Native elders are age eligible at 55.

The checks, worth $40, can be used to buy Washington-grown fresh fruits and vegetables at many farmers markets and some roadside farm stands throughout the state from June through October. Funding is limited and seniors are served on a first come, first serve basis.

An additional 2,350 seniors will receive selections of fresh local produce with their Meals on Wheels delivery or at their senior center because they live in areas without farmers markets. Eligible seniors, with a monthly income less than $1,575 for a single person or $2,111 for a couple can call 1-800-422-3263 to find the nearest program. Information is also available at http://nutrition.wsu.edu/markets

In addition to reducing hunger, the program helps improve the health and nutritional status of seniors. Diets high in fruits and vegetables reduce the risk of many diseases such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease and high-blood pressure.

The Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program is operated by DSHS Aging and Disability Services Administration in partnership with the State Department of Health, Area Agencies on Aging, Washington State Farmers Market Association, Washington Association of Senior Nutrition Programs, USDA, Washington State University Cooperative Extension, food banks, individual farmers, civic groups and advisory boards.

May is Older Americans Month with the theme: "Older Americans: Making Choices for a Healthier Future."
