May 28, 1956 - July 18, 2018

Matt Wynn Shildneck passed away July 18, 2018. Matt was born May 28, 1956 in Pasadena CA to Wray Schildneck and Adelia Schildneck (now Stewart) where they lived two years until returning to their native New Mexico.

Matt spent much of his youth in the outdoors building forts, camping, skiing, playing hockey, and roaming the arroyos of northern New Mexico with friends Nyles, Sandy, Robyn, and Terry - sometimes finding trouble but usually avoiding it.

He spent summers of his childhood with his dad, Wray and brother Jesse in southern NM hunting, riding motorcycles, and living the farm/ranch life. Matt eventually moved to Hatch, NM at the age of 17.

Matt finished high school in Hatch and then enrolled in NMSU where he “studied” but had lots of fun, mostly. He eventually followed Mark, his friend from college, to Friday Harbor where he met and married the love of his life, Kristy Wade, with whom he raised two beautiful daughters, Kaitlin and Alexandra.

Matt loved dancing, hockey, Taco Tuesdays, green and red chili, not necessarily in that order. Matt’s stability in life came from his daughters, his adored pups Bella and Bobby, “the bench,” and his voracious appetite for reading and music.

Matt loved the open road - whether cruising the highways with his family in the truck, a ride off the rock on motos for Sunday group therapy with his gang or solo moto trips back to New Mexico. His love for motorcycles started as a teenager and never stopped. His first bike was a Honda Trail 90 and his last bikes were a BMW K1200GT and a Suzuki DR650. He also taught his brother, Steven, how to ride as well.

Matt lived large his entire life and didn’t put off living until “he could afford it”. The positive impact he had on his family, friends and community is immeasurable. Matt had a beautiful smile, huge heart, gave big hugs and would help anyone who asked. He will be missed by so many.

Matt was preceded in death by his father Wray, dear grandparents Harry and Mary Lena, and ex-wife Kristy Wade.

Matt is survived by his daughters Kaitlin and Alexandra, mother Adelia, siblings Steven (Francelia), Ann (Renee), Jesse, many aunts, uncles, and cousins, and, equally important, his family of lifetime friends from Friday Harbor and New Mexico.
