02/20/2018: "Cooke Aquaculture May Sue State For $76M"

The Stranger’s Daily Slog newsletter reports there is a possibility that Canadian owned Cooke Aquaculture “will seek mandatory arbitration under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) if the state succeeds in phasing out Atlantic salmon farming.

Cooke vice president Joel Richardson told KUOW that the company isn't the first to have net failures and accidental Atlantic salmon releases into Washington waters, and that when previous American-owned fish farms had salmon escape, the state didn't do anything about it.”

How this will play out is hard to predict, but it may be that Cooke is seeking some leverage on appealing their permits to operate; or perhaps the legal fees involved are considered an investment toward an out of court settlement. Or maybe they will just make the threat and see what reaction, if any, it produces.
