06/25/2012: "16% Excise Tax Considered"
//UPDATED//: The SJC SWAC (Solid Waste Advisory Committee) will discuss a recommendation from the County that an excise tax of 16% to cover capital and operation costs going forward until solid waste related bond debt is paid off. This would be a 60% increase over the existing excise tax of 10% on all garbage collected by the county and the certificated hauler.
No tax is collected on the disposal of recyclables, The tax would be collected on garbage only by the sites and certificated hauler.
While the county is exiting operation of its sites, there still exists supervision of the system and site operators; monitoring of the landfills; and paying off the bonded debt incurred by the system. .
The SWAC will discuss the request, and may vote to make a recommendation to the Council on the questions of: Is 16% the right amount? Should it be levied on garbage only, recycling only, or both?
SWAC will meet June 26, 2012, 11:30 AM - 1:30PM, in the Council Chambers of the Legislative Building in Friday Harbor
