05/23/2011: "Kings Market SJI Marathon"

The running of San Juan Island’s premier running events; Marathon (26.2 miles), Half Marathon (13.1 miles) and a newly added 10K (6.2 miles), will be held on Sunday, June 5. Volunteers are needed to help as aid stations handlers, course directors and finish line helpers.
If interested in volunteering please call San Juan Fitness at 378-4449 and leave your name for "Kerry."
All three races start at 8:30 am, which all runners being off the course by 2:00 pm. All events will start and finish at the San Juan Country Fairgrounds.
The organizers thank all those who have helped in developing and producing these events, which has earned the “most scenic” nod from Northwest Runner magazine. And a big thank you to Kings Market for being their presenting sponsor!
Course and Traffic Information: The Marathon and Half Marathon starts at San Juan County Fairgrounds and heads out San Juan Valley Road until Wold. Runners will follow Wold until Bailer Hill and Half Marathoners will follow Bailer Hill to Douglas, then little and on to Cattle Point. Then Half Marathoners will turn right on Argyle and continue up the Argyle hill until the finish at San Juan County Fairgrounds. Marathoners will turn right on Bailer Road and run to Lime Kiln State Park, turn around, and continue back to town the same way as the Half Marathoners.
Upon reaching Friday Harbor, Marathoners will continue around the Turn Point and Pear Point Loops before finishing at the Fairgrounds. Complete course descriptions can be found at www.sjmarathon.org
10K runners will, from the Fairgrounds, run the Turn Point and Pear Point Loop arriving back to the Fairgrounds and the finish.
Sunday morning drivers will need to be very cautious and aware as they encounter runners on these public roads. Please give them the right away and when passing runners and pass with care.
