02/06/2011: "Orcas Rec Levy Passes"

In the special election of February 8, 2011, Orcas Island Parks and Recreation District successfully passed its first operating levy. The measure, which proposed a tax levy of 9 cents per $1000 of assessed valuation for six years, was leading 61.18% to 38.82% as of the first count Tuesday night.

Additional ballots received from the Orcas Island ballot box and by mail on Wednesday will be counted on Wednesday, but the results are not expected to change.

Orcas Rec ran a similar measure in last November’s general election. The measure received a significant majority of votes"58.75%"but failed to achieve the “super-majority” of 60% required for most levies. The money raised will be used to provide programs, services, and activities involving parks and recreation, similar to the activities formerly provided by County Parks through its Orcas Island Recreation Program. In addition, the money may be used for facilities for recreational activities and programs.

Because the funds are property taxes, and property tax bills for 2011 are already prepared, no collections will be made until tax year 2012.
