11/11/2010: "School Honors Vets"

Mrs. Williams’ Quest Class in the Friday Harbor Middle School honored veterans this week by inviting them to a “Honor Our Veterans” assembly in the Middle School commons room, where speakers and students thanked the vets for their "service and sacrifice."
Each veteran was presented with a blood red rose and a small white plate on which the students had placed a cupcake with an American Flag standing in the middle of it. It was a sight to see grizzled vets shyly smiling as they held the rose and the plate with the flag adorned cupcake.
The published invitation said the Quest Class which organized and put on the event intended "our presentation not only shows our appreciation for your service but also helps the other middle school students better understand the debt this country’s citizens owe our military veterans."
What better place to honor a vet than a school; and best summed up by the statement about WWII: "If you can read this, thank a teacher, if you can read this in English, thank a vet." Good advice on any day of the year.
