04/24/2010: "Search Suspended For Possible Suicide Victim"

The Coast Guard has suspended the search for "a possible person in the water" in the vicinity of Boundary Pass is San Juan County. The search began shortly after 1 p.m. after a whale watching boat is reported to have noticed a drifting unmanned dinghy The Coast Guard responded with a HH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Port Angeles, and the Cutter Terrapin, an 87-foot patrol boat from Bellingham, to conduct a search of the area. The search was called off late Friday night after it was determined there was no chance of survival based on the water and weather conditions.

Early reports indicate "The 14-foot craft contained what appeared to be a suicide note, identification and clothing." The identification of the man has not been released, but the indications are the man was not from San Juan County.
