09/14/2009: "Potluck / Lecture At Labs"
The Marine Science Associates Potluck / Lecture will be held in the Commons at the Friday Harbor Laboratories on Thursday, September 17 from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m.
Anyone interested in current research in the marine sciences is welcome to attend. Signs will direct you to the parking area. Two illustrated talks will be presented following the potluck dinner.
The title of the talk will be:
“A Distant Mirror: Deep-Sea Research on Board the Albatross 100 Years Ago”
The speaker will be David L. Pawson, Senior Scientist, National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC. and his research specialty is deep-sea biology, with emphasis on sea stars, sea urchins and their relatives.
David will be talking about what it was really like on board early research ships, when deep-sea exploration was just beginning and when every trawl haul included many animals new to science. Newly-acquired archival materials from eminent marine biologists provide personal insights into daily life aboard the US Fish Commission Steamer Albatross and her explorations in the Pacific Ocean.
Please call Kathy at 378-2165 ext 11 or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org by Monday, September 14. Let them know if you plan to attend the Potluck/Lecture and to find out what is needed for the potluck. Please bring a potluck dish and your own table settings. They will provide cups.
