07/15/2009: "Weight Loss Challenge"

The first annual “Community Weight Loss Challenge” on San Juan Island is just past the half way point with five weeks remaining. Participants began the twelve-week Challenge in June and are on a quest to see just how much body fat they can lose.

Fifty-Four contestants signed up for the program, including eight teams of four. Twenty-two people are going it alone. To date, the group as a whole has shed over 400 pounds

The program, produced by San Juan Island Fitness, provides a blog chockfull of useful lifestyle tips that promote healthy consumption ideas and great ways to stay active. Participants have the ability to login via password and post information about their progress or notes of inspiration. Weekly weigh-in happens each Monday, with a group support gathering announcing weekly victories and information exchange.

“People lose weight in so many ways and for so many reasons. We try to provide a variety of informational avenues and support that provide encouragement for our contestants. It’s really about a frame of mind and a drive to have a certain body type or increased energy or lower chances of heart disease or … and the list goes on” said Paul Hopkins, owner of San Juan Island Fitness.

Results of the Challenge will be determined by percentage of body fat lost, not total pounds lost. This is an important component of the challenge; we are determined to see decreased fat percentage and increased lean muscle percentage. Therefore, even the person who gained weight can still be the top winner. Final results and prizes will be announced immediately following the 8.8K awards ceremony at the San Juan County Fair.

Due to positive feedback and encouragement by several participants, look for round two of the Community Weight Loss Challenge this fall.
