09/15/2008: "SJI Transfer Station Analysis Released"
A “Supplemental Alternatives Analysis” (SAA) for the San Juan Island Transfer Station replacement project has been released
:.
The SAA, includes a broad range of information that was not included in the more narrowly defined Environmental Impact Statement.
The SAA includes information about non-environmental aspects of the five sites, comparative “planning level” cost estimates and funding options.
The cost estimates come with strong caveats. “The cost estimates are useful for ballpark comparisons of site preparation and development costs,” Project Manager Steve Alexander said. “But until a site is selected and we do actual engineering and facilities design work, it’s impossible to give an accurate total project cost.”
Alexander said the document is still a work in progress and that information will be added as the process continues. In particular, sections on neighborhood and customer acceptance will be filled in as further feedback from the public is received.
At its September 15 meeting, the County’s Solid Waste Advisory Committee (SWAC) is scheduled to work on the process and criteria that it will use to develop a site recommendation. The SWAC agenda is available online at the: County website .
The Solid Waste Advisory committee is expected to present its site recommendation to the County Council in December and the Council is scheduled to make the final site selection in January.
