03/06/2008: "March 8 & 9: Free Composting Workshops"

Do you want to learn how to compost your food and yard waste for a healthier garden, yard, and environment?

San Juan County Public Works, WSU Extension, and the Conservation District are co-sponsoring FREE spring compost workshops:

Saturday, March 8th, 9 am to noon, ORCAS ISLAND Senior Center multi-purpose room

Saturday, March 8th, 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm, SAN JUAN ISLAND Mullis Senior Center

Sunday, March 9th, 10 am to 1 pm, LOPEZ ISLAND Elementary School

WHY SHOULD WE COMPOST?

• Composting is nature’s recycling system that will make your plants healthier and will improve your soil’s water-holding capacity.
• You can save money on your trash disposal bill while turning your yard and kitchen waste into a free soil amendment.
• Composting is convenient and easy…you won’t have to bag up your grass clippings, leaves, or garden waste and take these “resources” to the solid waste facility.
• Composting saves landfill space; it’s more hygienic to compost your food waste than to mix it with your trash that gets trucked, ferried, and railed to the mainland.
• Burning leaves and brush produces air pollution…so why not add them to your compost instead?

You can learn how to do it right at the workshops taught by Janet Hall, Master Composter from Island County WSU Extension. And, you’ll be able to purchase your own back yard compost bin at reduced cost!

Please bring your own lunch and refreshments. This will be a ZERO WASTE event so we ask you to take back your own trash or choose reusable or recyclable packaging materials.
