Locals may know him as a gardener, a writer, a print maker, or a mandolin player, but Jim Nollman has long been recognized internationally as one of the top animal communication experts in the world. His work with whales and music has taken him to the Arctic several times, and to other exotic locations like the Azores, Tenerife, and the White Sea.

He has just returned from a trip to Tonga to conduct a musical interaction with humpback whales. Jim is best known for his 12 summers systematically researching communication with the orcas that reside off the northern coast of Vancouver Island.

Since his last presentation at the Whale Museum, Jim has produced a CD of music created by 16 composers from 10 countries, all made from underwater sounds including whales, walrus, seals, dolphins, lobsters.

He has also started developing a whale detector for the US Navy. If the detector finds whales in the vicinity, active sonar systems will not be deployed. He has made a film with a French team for National Geographic, parts of which he’ll show this Friday evening.

If you’d like to hear some truly amazing stories about whales, explore the latest ideas about whale language, listen to music made from whale calls, and see art works that demonstrate animal communication and emotions, You owe it to yourself to attend his show at the Whale Museum on Friday August 31 at 7:30 PM. The event is free. Donations are happily accepted. Nollman’s artworks, CDs and books are available at the Whale Museum.
