Catherine Eaton Skinner will have a show at the Waterworks Gallery, running from September 6th through the 28th.
This will be the gallery’s September show, and will feature the mixed media encaustic paintings of Catherine Eaton Skinner.

Catherine Eaton Skinner is a former full time Island resident, now spends her time between Seattle, San Juan and Santa Fe. Catherine has been represented by the gallery since 1987.

The dogs running, the trees, the herons flying overhead, the winter chickadees roosting in the trees. All of these places that dwell on the variety of themes and subjects that are in the place called Between the Hills.

Encaustic has its roots in 5th century B.C. The word “encaustic” is derived from the ancient Greek encaustikos, meaning “to heat” or “to burn”, this medium was originally practiced by Greek artists to paint portraits and decorate marble and terra cotta architectural elements. Encaustic painting is a process in which layers of wax and pigment become bound together with the use of heat. Many artists are using this medium in a variety of innovative and creative ways,

Established in 1985, waterworks has grown over the years to represent an eclectic blend of artists from the Pacific Northwest, including, Oregon, Washington and British Columbia.
Hours: Tuesday ~ Saturday, 10.00 to 6.00 and Sunday 11.00 to 4.00.

Stop by to see all that's new and refreshed. Check out our website www.waterworksgallery.com for the 2008 show schedule.

New Choir Director

Friday Harbor Presbyterian Church has been on this island for almost 150 years. During that time, music has been an integral part of its ministry. With that history behind her, Denise King is taking over the helm of the church’s chancel choir.

Community members know Denise as director of Skagit Valley College, San Juan Center and as a performer and director for San Juan Community Theatre productions.

It is not necessary to be a member of FHPC in order to sing in the church choir, just a desire to share your love and gift of music.

In Denise’s own words: “This singing group is open to singers of all ages and ability. In our 5:30-7:00 PM Thursday evening rehearsals you will not only learn the songs we will sing in worship services, but you’ll enjoy a mid-week fellowship with other music-makers. By the end of our time together, you will be smiling. We will have a very merry time!”
Choir rehearsals begin September 4 at the church. Please contact Denise King at 378-9751 or at 5kings@rockisland.com.

Art Museum & Westcott Bay Unite

For the past seven months, WBI & VAM have been discussing ways in which they could better serve the community by working together.

In a retreat held July 13th, the Boards of the Westcott Bay Institute for Art & Nature (the Sculpture Park and the Island Museum of Art) and the Visual Arts Museum (VAM) agreed to a full “merger” to be effective January 1, 2009.

They will, however, begin partnering immediately. The two groups will share a booth at the upcoming San Juan County Fair and continue with all their planned exhibitions, lectures, shows, and educational programs.
