Pelindaba Downtown film club presents (Friday, 17 Nov 06, @ 6:30pm) : "TSOTSI" Winner of the 2006 Academy Award®: Best Foreign Language Film, Tsotsi represented a breakthrough of South African film-making onto the international film scene. Set in Soweto and Johannesburg, this film adaptation of an Athol Fugard story has updated the period to the post-apartheid era. Tsotsi n. thug, gangster, hoodlum

Set amidst the sprawling Johannesburg township of Soweto - where survival is the primary objective - TSOTSI traces six days in the life of a ruthless young gang leader who ends up caring for a baby accidentally kidnapped during a car-jacking.

The film relates a triumph of spirit and personal redemption among the daily challenges faced by so many caught in the cycle of poverty, violence and survival that is otherwise so foreign to indigenous culture norms. DIRECTOR: Gavin Hood. (2006 – Rated R) Film showing (94 mins) commences 6:30 pm, followed by discussion.
