09/23/2017: "Can Life-Care Be Resuscitated?"

A large group of concerned citizens showed up at the Mullis Center on San Juan Monday night to attend a “brain storming” session organized by Patty Garcia to address the upcoming closing of the Life Care center in Friday Harbor.
As is common in open discussions a full range of ideas were put forth as to why the center close; is there anyway to reverse the decision; can county government step in and take it over; if it can be continued should it’s roll be expanded, to name but a few of the suggestions and thoughts put forth.
A couple of participants suggested nothing can move forward until data is obtained, and there is an understanding of the finances are explored. One of the employees said the center had been operating in the red for years, to the tune of $1m.
It was also pointed out that the operating loss did not include a mortgage that would also have to be addressed if someone else was to start it up.
Where would the money come from to start it up -taxes, bonding, donations, all were suggested as possible sources- but if Life Care could not make a go of it, some asked, can anyone else?
Additional meetings are expected to be announced.
