08/10/2017: "Why Are There Only Men On SJC Planning Commission?"

The San Juan Island Women’s Group, formed by the organizers of the Women’s March on Friday Harbor, have sent open letters to the local media asking “the Council to appoint women and other members of the community who represent our county’s demographics to the Planning Commission.”

The San Juan County (SJC) Planning Commission has nine appointed members and -as the group points out- all men “even though the majority of our county’s population is female;” adding “SJC has one of the few Planning Commissions in Washington State, comprised entirely of men.”

There have been women appointed to the Planning Commission since it’s inception, many of whom have served as it’s chair, but according to a spokesperson for the County Council, of the approximately fifteen appointments made since around 2013, all have been men, for the very simple reason no women have applied to be appointed.
