“Medical Services PIMC Really Provides”

By Dr. Douglas R Tuttle

Let me be very clear, I support Planned Parenthood and the services it provides. However, in the midst of the exuberance of the agenda to provide funding for the organization on the island, some inaccuracies in fact have become "common knowledge."

First of all, elective abortions have never been offered on island.

Peace Island Medical Center (PIMC) coming to town has not changed that. Neither has active participation in "physician assisted suicide" been affected. Prior to PIMC's arrival providers at the IIMC voted unanimously not to provide "physician assisted suicide” prescriptions.

Comprehensive women's health services are currently available from the providers working at PIMC...from birth control pills, IUD's to cervical cancer screening. Indeed when I worked for PIMC I was never told to refrain from providing birth control, "morning after" pills, STD screening, or family planning advice, etc. Dogma did not get in the way of practice.

While I agree with supporting Planned Parenthood financially if it can provide local services otherwise not already provided by PIMC and its visiting specialists, I take great exception to promulgating false information to achieve that end.

(Dr. Douglas R Tuttle practiced in Friday Harbor, including at the Inter Island Medical Centerwith over 44 years of experience in the field of medicine. He currently resides in Anacortes)
