07/05/2012: "The Sun Came Out For The 4TH"

(Grand Marshall Verne Howard -IG photo)
There was some nervous watching of weather patterns on the day before the parades and general festivities, but the sun and crowds did show up for the 4th.
The big parade in Friday Harbor went off without a hitch, with large crowds lining the entire length of Spring Street.
As always, and fittingly, The American Legion led the parade, with this years Grand Marshall, Verne Howard, following in a bright red convertible.
Howard was selected as the 2012 Grand Marshall in recognition of his varied and generous contributions to the schools, the community at large, and who has stayed in the background, avoiding recognition for his personal involvement and contributions to the community.
Bob Jarman, who is running for San Juan County Council seat currently held by Lovel Pratt, received the Judge’s Choice Best Theme award for his impressive ‘Train” float. The Whale Museum once again won, this year for the Best Animal costume, while the SJI Library took the Best Group Costume.
