02/23/2012: "Tracking A Tagged Orca"
(Screen capture of NOAA map -see link below)
On Feb. 20, the research team from NOAA's Northwest Fisheries Science Center (NWFSC) deployed a satellite tag on an adult male Southern Resident killer whale, J26, as part of a killer whale research cruise.
The research team is still at sea. As conditions allow, team members will continue tracking J pod to learn more about the whale's movement patterns, habitat use and feeding behavior.
Extensive information on the satellite tagging project, including a map of recent locations from J26's tag, is posted on the NWFSC web page at: www.nwfsc.noaa.gov/research/divisions/cbd/marine_mammal/satellite_tagging.cfm
The Northwest Fisheries Science Center conducts research on Southern Resident killer whales under a scientific research permit issued to the center. The permit was amended in December 2011 to allow satellite tagging of a limited number of Southern Residents.
