The annual Friday Harbor Spelling Bee drew a large supportive audience as students attempted to spell their way through a list of words, such as “gnash,” “monetary” and “quench.”

The event is sponsored by the Rotary Club of the San Juan Islands, and was held on the main stage of the San Juan Community Theatre, and included students from the Friday Harbor Middle School (FHMS) and Spring Street International School (SSIS),

There were a total of fourteen students, but only two left standing after the rest got tripped up on tricky spellings.

Kai Herko and Will Christison Williamson were the last two standing, but Will was able to outlast Kai to take the title and the $100.00 check, plus another $200.00 awarded to his classroom, and $300 to the FHMS literacy program.

The participating student were Dalton Ayers; Bridget Booth; Will Christison Williamson; Beatrice Grauman; Lauren Ayers; Madeleine Hance; Dylan Allen; Kai Herko; Mikayla Valentin; Tawan Shaller; Savannah Hoffman; Jaclyn Domenech; Emily Cain, and Sam Paul-Barrette

Admission to the spelling bee is free, and parents, family members, and the public are all welcome to attend. The Rotary Club hopes to see you next year. For more information, please call Mike Close at 378-6202.
