A boater was forced to leap into the cold waters of Griffin Bay Sunday night when a fire started in his boat.

Trac Walter on San Juan Island reported she saw “a vessel engulfed in flames from the Jackyl's Lagoon pull out on San Juan Island. We saw a person in the water swimming towards the shore. It appeared the man was wearing a scuba tank on his back.

Walter reported “a fishing vessel came into view and proceeded to pick the man up out of the water.” (photo below)

Early reports indicate the operator of the boat was alone, and received only minor burns on one arm.
