08/21/2010: "Dropped A Bomb when they said “Bong?"
The Ferry Yakima had a bomb scare late Friday as it approached Lopez Island when without explanation loud speaker system instructed all passengers to move to the end of the ferry. While this was going on, no vehicles or passengers were allowed to embark or disembark from the vessel.
One of the passengers told the Island Guardian that “We didn’t have any idea what was going on until they came back on the speaker and told us there had been a bomb threat. You could tell from his voice that he was wound-up and out of breath.”
The witness said when they arrived at Friday Harbor “the police came on board and made a search of the belongings of the person believed to have said he had a bomb, or a “bong.” There was no explanation as to why anyone would have said either word loud enough for the other passengers to hear.
No bomb was found, and the routine returned to normal, which is to say the ferry system would be running a tad late.
