08/18/2010: "Even A"Dead" Ember Can Start It"

(Grass Fire advancing slowly toward structures)

A San Juan Island home owner on Two Barn Farm Lane found out that even a can of dead embers and ashes can contain an unseen live ember that can blossom and spread with alarming speed.

“Ashes” were dumped on a compost pile, nothing happened…but then a neighbor ran over yelling about a grass fire moving slowly but relentless toward the neighbor’s house. Quick work with garden hoses helped until the local first responders showed up and completed the job of putting out the grass fire; and dealing with a large soaking wet but smoldering compost pile.
