02/25/2010: "Captive Orca Kills Trainer At SeaWorld"

BBC News has reported that a captive orca at SeaWorld attacked and killed a trainer at an afternoon show.

According to a number of reports, this is not the first time that orca at SeaWorld have been involved in attacks, and it is not the first time that Tilikum, the orca responsible for this attack, has been involved in a human killing.

In early 1991 Tilikum was one of two other killer whales blamed for the drowning death of a handler in British Columbia, and the Orlando Sentinel reported that a body was found with Tilikum in 1999; if Tilikum was responsible in anyway is not known.

Contrary to the way these things seem to end up, SeaWorld did issue a statement that Tilikum would not be destroyed.
