02/19/2010: "Council Expanding Video Recording To Video Conferencing"

There are still the occasional bugs, but for the majority of users the county council meetings can now be viewed on line after the fact by clicking on http://sanjuanco.com/Council/video.aspx.

Some have reported problems connecting when using a Firefox browser, and others cannot connect at all unless they have the right software loading on their computers.

One of the problems is the buffering time.

At the Island Guardian we found it took hours to download the whole video using Firefox, but on Internet Explorer the problem went away, while others have reported it works fine for them on Firefox.

One warning is while the video runs next to the agenda for the day of the meeting, and so it is possible to click on an agenda item to jump to the selected item, but since the council has moved to an “action Item” agenda, what you see on the agenda is not all that transpired on any given meeting day, so you are forced to run though the whole video to find out what really went on.

The Council is also moving forward on video meetings, and had a successful first try last week when they held a video meeting between the council on San Juan Island and SJC Community Services Manager Joyce Rupp (photo above) on Orcas.

The goal is to move to live video streaming to allow anyone anywhere with an inter-net connection to watch council meetings live. May be some time before that happens, but that is the goal
