02/11/2010: "The Barefoot Burglar Back On Orcas?"
Colton Harris-Moore may be back on Orcas to spread more cheer and good will. Previous Story
At least that is what have law enforcement officials concerned after an airplane was found early Thursday morning at the Orcas airport that had two of Colton's trade marks, one, the $650,000 plane was found sitting in mud off of the runway, and it was found to be stolen, and two, it was damaged due to a "hard landing". The same thing that has been found to be case when Colton has gone flying before.
Add to that the break-in of the Orcas home Grown Market last night, and that whoever it was that broke in also left a drawing of bare feet on the floor next to the door. It seems the evidence mounts that we have return of Colton.
SJC Sheriff Bill Cumming states "The investigation of both these incidents indicates that a definite ‘person of interest’ would be Colten Harris, mainly due to the similarities of these crimes and earlier crimes we believe him to be responsible for."
Cumming added "We are concentrating part of our efforts in identifying and collecting physical evidence from these crime scenes and will have the WSP Mobile Crime Scene Team on scene to process these scenes, and items from the scenes." and added "We are also working with outside local agencies, as well as federal agencies on this case as the investigation is on going and also outside our county."
At least two things are different now from when he started breaking the law as a 12 year old. He is now legally an adult, and he may be armed. An Island County Deputy sheriff’s car was broken into, and a rifle was stolen.
Last year after he was spotted on the mainland he fled into woods, and as police move toward his position a shot was fired. If it was from Colton, or someone else was not determined, but it does add concern that things may have, or could, go beyond the stealing of cars, boats, planes and the break-ins.
The only good news in all this -if there is any- is that when Harris-Moore is captured, he will stand trial as an adult. He will be serving some hard time.
