09/13/2009: "Open Burning Season Still Closed"
With the recent rains, local fire departments have been asked whether it is now permissible to burn brush piles. For now, the answer is still “No.”
The one exception is recreational fires, which are small fires, not more than two-feet in diameter and contained in a fire ring or otherwise cleared area.
Larger fires, such as brush piles will require a burn permit. Normally, burn permits are issued from October 1st through June 30th. Even with the recent rains, the County’s trees and brush are still very dry.
Because of the current fire risk and the weather forecast for the remainder of September, it is unlikely that burn permits will be made available before October 1st.
The Fire Marshal’s Office will issue a public notice once burn permits are available. Permits for fires up to ten feet in diameter will be available from your local fire district and online. There will be a $15 fee for the permit.
Questions may be directed to the San Juan County Fire Marshal’s office at 378-3473.
