(Mayor Jones presents proclamation to Jeanne Hyde)
The Friday Harbor Town Council has been joined by the San Juan County Council in support of Earth Hour, which takes place on March 28.
The idea is "On March 28 you can VOTE EARTH by switching off your lights for one hour. Or you can vote global warming by leaving your lights on."
The matter came to the attention of the two councils when Jeanne Hyde (photo above) showed up during pubic access time in front of the two councils and asked them to join in. Both agreed.
Hyde suggests that "if people are going to the middle school play on Sat. night the 28th they could turn off their lights at home before going. Even those going to other events such as a party, well maybe the host/hostess will consider having the party via candlelight, for that hour. Some people get together make it fun for the kids - a night time treasure hunt, an hour of games by flashlight, or even an hour of talking to one another!"
According to www.earthhour.org, "The results of the election are being presented at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009. We want one billion votes for Earth, to tell world leaders that we have to take action against global warming."
