There will be two food events in Friday Harbor on March 18th that should bring together islanders who are interested in Chocolate.

The first event is a presentation by Ecuadorian cacao farmer and truffle maker Enrique Cerda -with translator/intern Becca Roebber- of the community owned Kallari Chocolate Association. The second event is a “truffle making class and chocolate tempering demonstration”

First event will be at the SJI Library Meeting Room (1010 Guard St) from 3:15 - 4:45pm, and then on to Bakery SJ (775 Mullis St.) from 5:00 to 7:00pm for the Truffle class.

There will be a chocolate tasting featuring single origin bars of various percentages from around the world - helping participants understand the taste and reason for the wide range of flavors available in the diverse array of chocolates.

The class will also be with Enrique Cerda -who is a Master Truffle Maker of Chocolate- along with the co-owner of Bakery San Juan, Patrick, a formally trained French pastry chef and master baker.

Both events are free, but donations will be gladly accepted to go directly to Kallari to help defray costs of travel and chocolate. Info: 472-0880 Maureen/317-5890 Linda

RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED, due to limited class size - currently almost full.: contact Linda at 317-5890 or email slowfoodlandandsea@gmail.com Recommended donation to cover cost of chocolates and travel for the presenters is $25.00,

About the Land & Sea Friday Harbor chapter of Slow Food USA: Land & Sea is part of Slow Food USA. Our convivium (chapter's) mission is supporting and advocating for Clean, Fair, Healthy Food and Sustainable Agriculture, with an emphasis on directly supporting our local farmers and producers. (Check out their web page at http:www.slowfoodlandandsea.blogspot.com/

Our founding members are Pam Stewart, who among many things is a natural yeast baker, mom, and owner with Bill of Cafe Demeter; Candace Jagel - mom, goat advocate, and multitasking WSU Extension office Ag coordinator; Matt & Maureen Marinkovich - local fishermen, retailers, and parents; and Linda Degnan Cobos - mom, drywall plasterer and artist.

We worked the last 2 years as logistical support for getting a healthy, local lunch program in our schools, with the wish to increasingly involve our island farmers. We are now continuing work in direct support of our island farmers and producers, island kids, and our local food traditions.

“We believe that island farms mean jobs, healthy food, and a strong local economy. We all win!”//
