03/13/2008: "Sign Up Time: Evergreen Girls and Boys State"

The time is now for junior girls and boys at Friday Harbor High School and Spring Street School to sign up for the annual session of Evergreen Girls State and Evergreen Boys State.

The programs are a government training program designed to give high school juniors the knowledge of the duties, privileges, rights, and responsibilities of American citizens. Also, students who attend Girls or Boys State will learn how our system of government functions and responsibilities they will bear as adults.

Students who are chosen to attend Girls or Boys State are expected to have no other plans during the week long sessions. The 2008 session of Girls State will take place for one full week from June 7-14 and Boys State will take place June 15-21. Other eligibility requirements of students attending are that they must be between the ages of 15-18 and have every intention of returning to high school as a senior.

There is no cost to students who are chosen as for Girls or Boys State representatives. The American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) offers several scholarships. Applications for these scholarships are available in the High School counseling office. Due date for applications is March 28.

Students who are chosen for the program must demonstrate the qualities of leadership, teamwork, interest in government and community service. The American Legion and Legion Auxiliary selection committees will consider these qualities.

Girls State is sponsored by the local American Legion Auxiliary and Boys State is sponsored by the American Legion. All students who are juniors in high school are encouraged to apply. Call Minnie Knych at 378-4662 for more information.
