10/29/2007: "Drive-Through Flu Shots Offered"
In the event of an influenza pandemic or disease outbreak, health care and emergency workers will need to coordinate their efforts to deal with the sick and administer mass vaccinations quickly.
In addition to the County Scheduled Flu Shot Clinics being offered on the three major Islands, there is also an opportunity on Tuesday, November 6, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., for Orcas residents to roll up their sleeves and help workers prepare for such an emergency by participating in a drive-through influenza vaccination clinic at the Eastsound Fire Station.
The participating emergency responders will include the Orcas Fire department, the Department of Emergency Management, and employees of the San Juan County Sheriff’s, Public Works, Senior Services, and Health and Community Services departments, the Red Cross and Ham Radio operators.
The professionals will handle traffic control, check medical information and administer vaccinations without the recipients ever leaving their vehicles. Last year, the first drive-through “Pandemic Exercise” was held on San Juan Island. Despite rainy weather, 151 people were inoculated.
The cost of the shots is $28 each (please have cash or checks ready). Residents with Medicare Part B or Medicaid coverage can simply show their cards to the workers and receive the shots.
