10/04/2006: "County Looks To Hire Project Manager For "Ecosystem-Based Initiative""

(The County Council has sent out the following press release -Ed) The San Juan County Council and Shared Strategy for Puget Sound are still seeking an experienced and talented professional to lead their ecosystem-based Initiative.
(Previous Guardian story on CC & SS agreement)

This is an exciting opportunity for a senior level project manager to shape and execute an innovative approach to working with policy-makers, scientists, community members and key stakeholders on one of the most important and difficult issues of our time: conservation and stewardship of our ecosystems.

The San Juan Initiative seeks to protect ecological functions – through the complete range of available management tools: regulatory, voluntary, incentive and educational programs -- in a manner that also protects human interests such as water quality, human health, private property rights and public safety. The Initiative is a public-private partnership that will assess the effectiveness of and work to find solutions to the gaps found across the protection management tools. The program will include the natural ecosystem of the San Juan Islands and the surrounding marine waters.

This Initiative is unique in that it proposes to involve community members and leaders, scientists, and key stakeholders in reaching consensus on collective goals, highlighting areas that are meeting the protection goals and defining (through an assessment of effectiveness) problem areas, crafting solutions and then committing to act across each of these programs. It also proposes that solutions to these complex ecological problems draw on local and traditional knowledge, the experiences of those who live and work on the land, and the scientists who are experts in their fields of study.
The Shared Strategy is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization who will carry fiduciary responsible for the Initiative in partnership with the San Juan County Council. This is a full-time temporary contract position for 18 months to two years located in San Juan County, Washington with the potential for longer term employment. Compensation will be determined based on experience but ranges from $60,000 to $90,000 per year. Some travel around the Puget Sound region may be required.
