09/29/2006: "Good Luck On Monday For An ADU Permit!"
The San Juan County Department of Community Development & Planning will accept applications for a limited number of Detached Accessory Dwelling Units (ADU's) on Monday, Oct 2, 2006. A "by phone only" process is to be used to determine who will have the right to construct a guest house.
ADU PERMITS ARE LIMITED: The County Council has set a total limit of only 15 ADU permits in calendar year 2006 will be issued for all of San Juan County. Of those 15, only 13 permits are available for construction of new ADUs, the remaining 2 permits are reserved for conversion of legally permitted existing structures to ADUs.
If you miss out in beating others to the phone, you can apply again next year. If someone does obtain a permit, and then fails to act on it, the permit is "dead", and will not be re-issued to -for example-to the next person in line, in that there will be no line to be in: once the first 15 permits are issued, the door is closed to any new applications until next year.
