09/27/2006: "SJI Community Foundation "Breakfast of Champions""
The "Breakfast of Champions" is an annual celebration on San Juan Island of the many nonprofit organizations whose services make San Juan island a better place to live because of their efforts.
Sponsored by the San Juan Island Community Foundation, the Breakfast of Champions will be held on Friday, September 29 from 7:30 am to 9am at the Mullis Senior Center. Highlighting the event will be the presentation of the 2006 grant awards. Last year the foundation provided grants to 19 island nonprofits totaling more than $55,000.
Phil Anthropy, the foundation's mascot, will be on hand to pass out the awards. Many will recall seeing Phil, a rather large pink pig, strolling through the grounds at the County Fair promoting the importance of philanthropy while bestowing hugs on young and old alike.
Beth Geiger, administrator of the Inter Island Medical Center will present an exciting community-wide health care initiative that will expand and enhance health care services to residents and visitors of the San Juan Islands. The Breakfast of Champions is an excellent venue for her presentation, as the success of this initiative will require the participation of many island nonprofits.
Established in 1994, the San Juan Island Community Foundation is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life on the island by encouraging philanthropy, growing an endowment for purposeful grants to community organizations, and building partnerships that effectively connect donors with island nonprofits.
