06/27/2006: "Home Construction Course Offered"
Skagit Valley College San Juan Center announces the availability this summer of a vocational course for home construction. Carpentry by Code is a six week seminar that presents participants with detailed introduction to the basic knowledge and the necessary skills required in building a house from concrete foundations to conventional wood framing. Additional attention is given to a consideration of codes governing different phases of housing construction and plan reading. No previous experience is necessary.
This course will be taught by Richard Russell who has 40 years of experience in practicing and teaching the trades involved in building quality homes. A certified construction trades instructor, Richard knows how to make learning a rewarding experience for all.
This course is being offered in partnership with Homes for Islanders, a private non-profit corporation funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (through Rural Development) to assist limited income families in building their own homes. Participants in the program have priority registration; however, there is space available for up to twenty additional students who wish to learn basic skills associated with building a house to enhance their own projects or employment prospects.
Classes will held on Wednesdays from 6:15pm - 9:15pm beginning June 28 through Aug 2. Tuition is $250 per student. For more information please contact Denise King at dking@skagit.edu or (360) 378-3220.
