04/22/2006: "NW Stone Sculptors Assoc 2nd Annual Exhibit"
The Westcott Bay Institute would like to welcome the Northwest Stone Sculptors Association to the Island Museum of Art for their 2nd Annual Exhibit.
This Exhibit includes over twenty of the world's best stone sculptors, including Friday Harbor's own Bill Weissinger with two of his sculptures: Salmon and Two Towers.
Along with several new sculptors, many of the featured artists from last year's show are back with new pieces to excite and fascinate the art lover in all of us.
One of the interesting aspects in a show like this one is that aside from the theme of stone sculpture; anything goes. The art and the creator's motivation behind it are individualized. Jonna Ramey, a sculptor from Utah is showing her piece, No More Sorrow. `She says, "it is a direct reaction to a photograph of an African man wasting away from AIDS and looking directly/defiantly into the camera. It electrified me. The phrase "No More Sorrow" is both a plea and a demand. The sculpture is a beginner's attempt to express what I see and feel." Then there is Confused a sculpture by Terry Slaton. His piece shows his preference for non-representational sculptures. "The challenge is one of form: interesting shapes and curves, shallows and bulges," he says. " I like the symbolism of twists: we eventually get to where we are going, but the path may be a bit circuitous."
The Island Museum of Art invites the public to stop by the Museum and view this exhibit, and find out first hand what motivates the artists to express themselves through stone carving. To find out more about the exhibit or the opening reception call the Museum at 370-5050.
