03/31/2019: "Statement From State On Vaccines"
Statement by Dr. John Wiesman, DrPH, MPH
“Engrossed House Bill 1638 aims to remove the personal and philosophical option to exempt children from the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine required for school and child care entry. The department supports this bill and all policies that remove the personal or philosophical belief exemption for the MMR vaccine and all required vaccines for child care and school entry.
We do so because vaccines save lives and prevent disease and disability. Everyone has a right to live in a community free of disease. We must continue to work to support awareness and decision making based on scientific evidence, and ensure our schools and communities’ right to health by use of vaccines that prevent disease.
The science is clear that vaccines are safe and effective. Vaccine programs are one of public health’s greatest accomplishments. They are under great threat and we need to reverse course.”
