01/28/2019: "Dem’s May Get Clever With Ranker Appointment"
The process of making an appointment to fill the Senate seat vacated by Kevin Ranker gives the Democratic Party some room to move player around, if they wish.
One possible example would be to move an currently elected official into the Senate seat, thereby creating a new vacant seat in some other position that can then also be filled. And they could conceivably do that more than one time.
It appears that is already being considered, based on the announcement that the San Juan County Council, the Skagit County Board of Commissioners and the Whatcom County Council will conduct a Special Joint Meeting to “appoint a replacement to fill the vacant 40th Legislative District State Senate position, and to discuss a potential vacancy in the 40th Legislative District State House of Representatives.”
Kristine Lytton (D), a former member of the House of Representatives, has already put her name forward -along with Whatcom Councilman Rud Browne, Anacortes Councilwoman Liz Lovelett, and of course, San Juan County Councilman Jamie Stephens; another local name in the mix is Learner Limbach of Orcas Island.
For those who enjoy the workings of politics, the meeting will be held in the Skagit County Commissioners Hearing Room, 1800 Continental Pl #100, Mount Vernon, WA 98273, Tuesday, February 5, 2019 beginning at 2:30 p.m.
