06/10/2005: "Veterans and Motorcycles: A Fund Raising Weekend"
Events Planed to commemorating the 30th Anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War.
Motorcyclists To Ride to San Juan to Honor Service Members. On May 30th there were Hundreds of thousands of Vietnam veterans who gathered at the Pentagon for the annual Rolling Thunder Ride to support and honor veterans, and now San Juan Island will become the destination for a smaller gathering of veterans on motorcycles. The weekend events have been planned as a way to share and honor the veterans who served in the Vietnam War, and to raise money through a silent auction, dinners, and other activities. The Proceeds will benefit The Wounded Warrior Project, Homeless Vets in the Northwest and the local American Legion Military Museum.
Check below for a schedule of events that will include guest speakers and a commemorative & moving sunset ceremony to honor those who did not come home.
SCHEDULE OF EVENTS FOR THE WEEKEND EVENT!
FRIDAY, June 10
- Raffle at the American Legion with great prizes!
- Start of the Silent Auction which will continue thru Saturday
SATURDAY, June 11
- Arrival on island & registration ($12) at the American Legion 1st & Court Street. Court Street will be blocked off for motorcycles ONLY on Saturday & Sunday!
- Self directed Poker Run will highlight island attractions and merchants. Maps at registration. Turn in hands Saturday, winners announced Sunday morning (need not be present to win).
6:30 - 8:30 PM: Steak or Salmon feed at the American Legion ($15) or dine at any of our friendly dining establishments!
6:00 PM: Assemble outside the American Legion building for our commemorative ceremonies. Guest speakers, Firing squad, Salute and Taps with an unforgettable electric guitar echo.
8:30 PM: music at the Legion with the "BUZZ CUTS",
SUNDAY, June 12
7:30 - 10 AM: Pancake breakfast at the Friday Harbor Fire House, adjacent to the assembly area on Court Street.
10:30 AM: Fire 'em up and join in a ride around the island, about 50 miles of scenic byway and shoreline. There will be an incredible photo op during this run where lines of motorcycles will pass each other in a mutual review! We'll have a 'cam in the sky' as well as on the roads...............the return will take us back to town and Court Street to cool 'em off and, for those wishing to leave the island, wait for the 1:40 PM ferry to take them back to "the real world".
