Port of Friday Harbor port commissioners voted on Friday afternoon to appoint Graham Black to the commission. Of the four applicants who applied for the position, only three remained after Jim Hooper withdrew his name from consideration.
Port commissioners Chair Barbara Marrett and Greg Hertel had individually kept a score sheet on how each had answered questions put to the applicants, and after short discussion agreed to appoint Mr. Black.
Based on their comments prior to making a decision, it appeared that Black came out on top, in part, because he was relatively new to the community (fresh views and ideas); had a legal background (held a law degree); had experience and knowledge in construction, and had in general hit the right buttons when responding to the interview questions.
Black will replace former port commissioner Mike Ahrenius, who resigned resigned after offering to sell the Albert Jensen & Sons Shipyard to the Port, which is his families business.
Once his term of offices comes to an end Black will to register to run, and win, in the next scheduled election if he wishes to continue as a commissioner
